Refurbished MacBook Battery Health: What Is Good Enough?

Refurbished MacBook Battery Health: What Is Good Enough?

A refurbished MacBook can be a great buy, but the battery is the one part that wears out with use, so it deserves a proper look. This guide explains refurbished MacBook battery health in plain English: what the percentages mean, how battery cycles work, what "good enough" looks like, and how to check it yourself. It sits alongside our refurbished MacBook buyer's guide.

Quick answer: for a refurbished MacBook, 80% battery health or better is a sensible minimum, and 90% or better is close to new. At MacStore UK, every MacBook is guaranteed at 80% or above, and Premium grade at 90% or above.

Key takeaways

  • Battery health is the share of its original charge capacity a battery can still hold.

  • Apple designs MacBook batteries to keep up to 80% of their capacity at 1,000 charge cycles, the figure listed for the Mac laptops in its table.

  • 80% or better is a sensible minimum for a refurbished MacBook. 90% or better is close to new.

  • Our guarantee is 80% or above on every grade and 90% or above on Premium.

  • You can check battery health and cycle count on any Mac in under a minute.

What is MacBook battery health?

Battery health, which macOS calls maximum capacity, is how much charge the battery can hold now compared with when it was new. Every MacBook battery slowly loses capacity as it ages and as it is used. A battery at 90% holds nine-tenths of its original charge, so a full charge gives you about nine-tenths of the original runtime.

How do MacBook battery cycles work?

A charge cycle means using an amount of battery equal to 100% of its capacity, and that doesn't have to happen in one go. Apple's example: use half the battery in a day, recharge, then do the same the next day, and that counts as one cycle, not two.

Apple designs MacBook batteries to keep up to 80% of their original capacity at their maximum cycle count. For the Mac laptops in Apple's table that count is 1,000, though Apple says the limit varies between models, so check Apple's cycle count table for your exact MacBook. You can keep using a battery after it reaches that count, but you may notice shorter battery life.

Cycles and health are related, not identical. A low cycle count suggests plenty of designed life left, but heat and age also affect a battery, so look at both numbers where you can.

What battery health is good enough for a refurbished MacBook?

There's no single right number, but this is a practical way to read it:

Battery health

What to expect

Best for

90% or more

Close to the original runtime. Roughly 16 hours in the example below.

People who work away from a plug, or want to keep the MacBook for years.

80% to 89%

A solid battery with a little less runtime than new. Roughly 14 to 16 hours in the example below.

Most students, home and office users.

Below 80%

Below the level Apple designs the battery to reach at its maximum cycle count. Expect shorter life, and a replacement may be worth planning.

Not something our grades allow. Every grade is guaranteed at 80% or above.

The example: Apple rates the M4 MacBook Air at up to 18 hours of video playback. At 90% capacity you can roughly expect 16 hours in the same conditions, and at 80% roughly 14. These are simple estimates, and real life depends on what you do.

How much it matters depends on how you work. If your MacBook mostly sits on a desk near a charger, 80% is plenty. If you commute, travel or work in places without sockets, aim for 90% or more.

What battery health do we guarantee?

Every MacBook we sell has a guaranteed minimum battery health of 80% or above, and Premium grade is guaranteed at 90% or above. That is one of the two things the grade sets, the other being cosmetic condition. Our grading guide explains the grades in full.

Every device is tested with Blancco diagnostics, a platform of 86+ automated tests, and our process includes a battery assessment. Every MacBook also comes with a 12-month warranty covering repair or replacement for hardware breakdown, and 30-day returns with conditions.

Battery condition: Normal or Service Recommended?

Besides the percentage, macOS gives the battery a condition. Normal means the battery is working as expected. Service Recommended means the battery holds noticeably less charge than it should, or has an issue. The MacBook may still run fine, but its battery life will be shorter, and a replacement is worth considering.

Treat the condition and the percentage as a pair. A Normal condition with a healthy percentage is what you want from a refurbished MacBook.

How do you check a MacBook's battery health?

  1. Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.

  2. Click Battery in the sidebar.

  3. Next to Battery Health, click the info button. You'll see the condition and, on many Macs, the maximum capacity.

  4. For the cycle count, hold the Option key, click the Apple menu and choose System Information.

  5. Select Power in the sidebar and look under Health Information for the cycle count and condition.

Menu names can differ slightly between macOS versions. Do this soon after your MacBook arrives. If the figure is below the guaranteed minimum on the listing, contact us and we'll help. Please also read the returns policy, because conditions apply.

Refurbished battery: what to ask before you buy

  • Is a minimum battery health guaranteed, and what is the number?

  • Does the minimum change with the grade?

  • How was the device tested, and by whom?

  • Does the warranty cover hardware faults, and for how long?

  • What are the returns terms if something isn't right?

A seller that can answer all five clearly is a safer bet than one that just says "good battery". For the full checklist, see our MacBook buyer's guide.

How can you keep a MacBook battery healthy?

These come from Apple's own advice:

  • Turn on Optimised Battery Charging. Your Mac learns your routine and waits to charge past 80% until you need it.

  • Keep it cool. Apple's ideal comfort zone is 16 to 22°C, and a MacBook works best between 10 and 35°C.

  • Store it half-charged. For long-term storage, charge to about 50%, and top it up every six months if it stays stored longer.

  • Look for a charge limit. Recent versions of macOS add a Charge Limit option on supported Macs. Check System Settings > Battery.

Refurbished MacBook battery FAQs

1. What is a good battery health for a refurbished MacBook?

Aim for 80% or above, and 90% or above if you want one that is close to new. Apple designs MacBook batteries to keep up to 80% of their capacity at their maximum cycle count. At MacStore UK, every grade is guaranteed at 80% or better.

2. Is 80% battery health bad?

No. It means the battery holds 80% of the charge it held when new, so you get roughly four-fifths of the original runtime. It suits people who mostly work near a charger. If you are often away from a plug, aim for 90% or higher.

3. How many battery cycles is too many for a MacBook?

Apple lists 1,000 cycles as the maximum for the Mac laptops in its table, the point where the battery is designed to hold up to 80% of its original capacity. Fewer cycles means more of the designed life is left, but a MacBook with more can still work well.

4. How do I check battery health on a MacBook?

Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, then Battery, and click the info button next to Battery Health. You will see the condition and, on many Macs, the maximum capacity. For the cycle count, hold Option, click the Apple menu, choose System Information and open Power.

5. What does Service Recommended mean on a MacBook?

It means macOS has found that the battery holds noticeably less charge than it should, or has an issue. The MacBook may still run, but battery life will be shorter and a replacement is worth considering. Normal means the battery is working as expected.

6. Do refurbished MacBooks from MacStore UK have a battery guarantee?

Yes. Every grade has a guaranteed minimum battery health of 80% or above, and Premium is 90% or above. Every MacBook also has a 12-month warranty covering repair or replacement for hardware breakdown, plus a 30-day returns policy with conditions.

7. Can you replace the battery in a MacBook?

Yes. Apple recommends replacing a MacBook battery once it reaches its maximum cycle count to maintain performance, and Apple and authorised service providers offer battery service. A battery that still suits your needs does not need replacing.
