If you've never bought refurbished tech before, grading labels like "Premium," "Excellent," "Good," and "Fair" can feel vague or even a little suspicious. What do they actually promise? Here's a plain-English breakdown of what each grade means, what's guaranteed regardless of grade, and how to pick the right one for you.

The one thing every grade has in common

Before getting into the differences: every device we sell, at every grade, is fully functional and covered by the same protections. Grading is purely about cosmetic condition - it has no bearing on whether the device works properly. Specifically, every device includes:

Premium

Like-new condition. The highest grade we offer and the closest grade to brand new and factory sealed devices

A Premium device shows no noticeable cosmetic damage - no scratches or dents visible from roughly 12 inches away. It looks pristine, essentially indistinguishable from new stock, and comes with our highest battery health guarantee (90%+). Excellent

Very good, near-premium condition, with only the faintest signs of previous use.

An Excellent device may have a barely noticeable faint scratch or scuff, if any at all - imperfections so minor they typically don't register unless you're actively looking for them. Battery health is guaranteed at 80% or above. This is usually the best value tier: you get condition that's close to Premium, at a lower price point.

Good

Visible but light signs of use - nothing that affects how the device works.

A Good-grade device shows light scratches or scuffs, and possibly minor denting (excluding large dents). Screens may have a hairline scratch or light surface wear. Battery health is still guaranteed at 80% or above. This is genuinely the sweet spot for a lot of buyers: meaningfully cheaper than Excellent, with cosmetic wear that's easy to live with day-to-day, especially if you'll be using a case or sleeve anyway.

Fair

Visible wear throughout, but fully functional - the best value tier.

A Fair-grade device shows noticeable scratches, scuffs, or dents on the surface, screen, and keyboard. Some units may have visible wear on keys or missing rubber feet on laptops. Battery health remains guaranteed at 80% or above, and functionality is identical to every other grade. If budget is the priority and you don't mind visible signs of a previous life, Fair delivers the biggest saving.

So which grade should you actually buy?

• Buying a gift, or want it to look brand new: Premium.
• Want it to look nearly new, without paying the premium price: Excellent.
• Practical buyer who'll use a case anyway: Good — usually the best value-for-appearance balance.
• Budget is the deciding factor, and function matters more than looks: Fair.

A note on "refurbished" vs "renewed" vs "used"

These terms get used loosely across the industry, and it's worth knowing the difference:

• Refurbished (what we sell) means a device has been professionally tested, any faults repaired, cosmetically graded, and backed by a warranty - a controlled, quality-assured process.
• Renewed is Amazon's own certification programme for sellers meeting Amazon's refurbishment standards — similar in spirit to "refurbished" but run and verified by Amazon rather than the retailer itself.
• Used (e.g. a private eBay listing) typically means none of the above - no guaranteed testing process, no standardised grading, and often no warranty at all.

The practical difference matters: a "used" listing at a similar price to a professionally refurbished one is very rarely the better deal once you account for the lack of testing, warranty, and returns protection.
