MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air: Which should you buy?

MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air: Which should you buy?

For years the Mac laptop choice was Air or Pro. Then on 4 March 2026 Apple launched the MacBook Neo, the cheapest laptop it has ever sold. It looks like a budget Air. It isn't one, and the reason is what's inside.

Short answer: get the Neo if you only need a laptop for light everyday use and the lowest price matters most. Otherwise, a refurbished MacBook Air is the better buy. It's faster, has a better keyboard and camera, and will still feel quick in a few years.

Chip and memory

This is the difference that matters most. The Air uses Apple's M-series chips, the same family found in the MacBook Pro, Mac mini and Mac Studio. It has a 10-core CPU built for laptop and desktop work.

The Neo uses the A18 Pro, a 6-core CPU and 5-core GPU chip that first shipped in the iPhone 16 Pro in 2024. It's the first time Apple has put an iPhone-generation chip in a Mac laptop. It's built to sip power, not to run flat out for hours.

Day to day, that means the Air pulls ahead when you have lots of apps open, export video, run creative software or keep dozens of browser tabs going. The Neo copes fine with browsing, email, documents, streaming and Apple Intelligence features. Just don't expect Air speed at a lower price.

Memory adds to the gap. The Neo has 8GB of unified memory and no upgrade options. The M5 Air starts at 16GB. If you're looking at an older refurbished Air, check the memory on the listing.

Software isn't a difference. Both run the current version of macOS.

Display

The two screens are closer than you might expect. Both are 16:10.

  • Neo: 13-inch Liquid Retina IPS LCD, 2408 x 1506, 500 nits, 60Hz, sRGB colour.

  • Air: 13.6-inch Liquid Retina, True Tone, P3 wide colour.

Where the Air wins is colour. P3 is richer and more accurate, which shows up in photo and video work, and True Tone adjusts the screen to the room you're in. For documents and web pages you probably won't notice.

Keyboard, trackpad and Touch ID

This is where the Neo's price shows most.

  • Neo: the keyboard isn't backlit, the trackpad has no Force Touch haptics, and Touch ID only comes on the 512GB model. The 256GB base model has none.

  • Air: backlit keyboard, Force Touch trackpad and Touch ID on every configuration.

If you type in dim rooms or like unlocking with a fingerprint, check this before you buy a base-spec Neo.

Ports and charging

The Neo has two USB-C ports, and they aren't equal. One runs at USB 3 speeds and supports DisplayPort. The other is limited to USB 2. Charging is over USB-C, so it takes up one of them.

The Air has two full-speed Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports and a separate MagSafe charger, so both ports stay free. If you plug in a monitor, a drive and a charger at the same time, the Air is far less of a hassle.

Battery life

The Neo's 36.5Wh battery is rated for up to 16 hours of video streaming or 11 hours of web browsing. Apple estimates the M5 Air at 15 to 18 hours depending on the task. The gap is small, with the Air slightly ahead, and either will last a full day of normal use.

Camera, speakers and design

The Neo has a 1080p camera, side-firing speakers with spatial audio and Dolby Atmos, and a dual-microphone array. The Air has a 12MP Center Stage camera that keeps you in frame on video calls, plus a four-speaker system. If you spend a lot of time on calls, the Air is the better one.

Both are aluminium, and at 1.23kg they weigh the same. The Neo is the fun one, coming in colours like citrus and blush. The Air sticks to Apple's quieter palette of silver, space grey, midnight and starlight, with sky blue on the M5.

MacBook Neo vs a refurbished MacBook Air

Here's the part most comparisons skip. The Air isn't only the M4 and M5. The MacBook Air M2 and MacBook Air M3 have the backlit keyboard, Touch ID, MagSafe and an M-series chip, all things the Neo lacks. Buy one refurbished and you get that at a budget-friendly cost.

Want something newer? The MacBook Air M4 and MacBook Air M5 have the latest chips. Want to spend the least? Our sticker-marked outlet MacBook Airs get the same testing and 12-month warranty, and the only difference is some cosmetic discolouration from a sticker.

Every device we sell is tested and comes with a 12-month warranty and 30-day returns. Data is erased to Blancco-certified standards, and our grading guide explains what each condition tier means.

Which is better for students?

Most students want a laptop that lasts the whole degree without costing much. The Neo handles essays, research, streaming and video calls. It falls short on the unlit keyboard (annoying in a late-night library), Touch ID being 512GB-only, and headroom if your course turns out to involve video editing, design or heavy coding.

For most students a refurbished MacBook Air is the safer bet. You get a backlit keyboard, Touch ID on every model and speed that won't feel dated by final year.

Which is better for business?

Businesses care more about reliability than the last bit of saving. The Air has full-speed ports, MagSafe, a better camera for client calls and more room to grow when people start juggling more apps. Buying for a team? Take a look at our buying for business page.

So, which one?

Pick the Neo if the price is what matters, you only need browsing, email, documents and streaming, and you like the colours. It's a real Mac running real macOS. It just isn't a fast one.

Pick an Air if you multitask, do creative work, or want a laptop that won't feel limiting in two years. The backlit keyboard, Force Touch trackpad, Touch ID, better camera and MagSafe all come standard.

If you're upgrading from an older Mac or buying your first proper laptop, we'd go with the Air. The Neo is a good answer to a narrower question: what's the cheapest Mac that does the basics?

FAQs

1. Is the MacBook Neo faster than the MacBook Air?

No. The Air's M-series chip has a 10-core CPU and beats the Neo's A18 Pro on heavier jobs like video exports, lots of apps at once and creative software.

2. Is the MacBook Neo good for students?

For light coursework, yes. But the keyboard isn't backlit and Touch ID is only on the 512GB model. A refurbished MacBook Air is usually the better long-term pick.

3. Does the MacBook Neo have Touch ID?

Only the 512GB model does. The 256GB base model doesn't. Every MacBook Air has it.

4. Does the MacBook Neo have MagSafe?

No. It charges over USB-C, using one of its two USB-C ports. The Air has a dedicated MagSafe port.

5. Can the MacBook Neo run Apple Intelligence?

Yes. It runs the same macOS as the Air, including Apple Intelligence. The Air just has more power to spare.

6. Is a refurbished MacBook Air better value than a new MacBook Neo?

For many buyers, yes. A refurbished Air gives you an M-series chip, a backlit keyboard, Touch ID and MagSafe, and it comes tested with a warranty. The Neo makes sense if you only need a machine for light everyday use.
